Born of Necessity – My Journey
From Personal Tragedy to Purpose
Life tested me in unimaginable ways. A few years ago, I emerged from a toxic marriage with the support of my two wonderful boys. I was regaining my footing when, in 2022, my beloved mother – my backbone – was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In that instant, my world collapsed. During her chemotherapy, she could only use natural, additive-free skincare. When the hospital gave her a bland tub of cream, I felt compelled to help. I went home and mixed botanical oils in my kitchen to give her some comfort. It was a small act of love, but it opened my eyes to the healing power of nature. Unfortunately, within a year I lost my mum, and a part of myself. Grief took a toll on me, and my skin reflected that pain.
Where Science Meets Nature
In that darkness, I turned to what I know best: science, drawing on over 20 years as an NHS cellular pathology specialist studying disease at the microscopic level. I combined that expertise with my resolve to heal through nature. The first thing I formulated was a rejuvenating face serum to revive my complexion – creating it sparked a glimmer of hope. Soon after, my son developed severe eczema while at home waiting for health care plan assessment to attend special needs school, he was out of school for six months, so I became his full-time carer. I refused to use steroid creams on his sensitive skin, especially knowing he might touch or even taste anything on it. I poured my scientific know-how into crafting a gentle alternative. After late nights researching anti-inflammatory plant extracts, I developed a Heal & Restore Cream that soothed his itchy, inflamed skin. To my relief, it worked – his skin healed without any harsh side effects.
When friends and family tried my serum and cream, their feedback amazed me. Stubborn skin issues from acne to rosacea began to improve. What started as a desperate attempt to help my family evolved into a passion to help others. I realized I had created something truly special – born of love and necessity.
On a Mission to Heal
Encouraged, I left the hospital lab to devote myself fully to this new calling. I pursued training in organic skincare formulation, became a member of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists, and became a Partner Scientist with the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2025, I officially launched Born of Necessity – a skincare line built on evidence-based botanical healing. Every product still begins on my kitchen table, but now each one is refined and tested with the same rigor as in the lab.
Today, Born of Necessity is more than a brand – it’s my personal journey shared with anyone struggling with their skin. My mission is to support people with sensitive skin and those facing cancer treatments by providing safe, nourishing care. I believe no one should have to choose between gentleness and effectiveness. Caring for your skin isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity.
