Tamanu oil, zinc oxide, and the honest science behind CALM Balm
I formulate skincare for a living, so I'm going to talk about our own cream the way I'd talk about anyone else's: honestly, including the bits where the science is still catching up.
CALM Balm was built around a simple problem. Inflamed, compromised skin, the kind you see in eczema, rosacea, post procedure skin, or skin that's just had enough, needs three things at once: calmer inflammation, a rebuilt lipid barrier, and lower bacterial load. Most creams pick one. We built ours around six ingredients that, between them, cover all three: tamanu oil, sea buckthorn oil, shea butter, ucuuba butter, blue chamomile and zinc oxide.
Tamanu oil: the barrier and the inflammation
Tamanu oil comes from the nut of Calophyllum inophyllum, and it's had more scientific attention in the last decade than almost any other botanical oil used in barrier repair skincare.
A 2015 study published in PLoS ONE tested tamanu oil against several bacterial strains associated with inflamed and infected skin, including the bacteria implicated in acne and folliculitis, and found meaningful antibacterial and wound healing activity across different tamanu oil sources. Separate comparative research on Calophyllum species has specifically evaluated its anti inflammatory properties, and reviews of the in vitro and in vivo data describe tamanu oil as having genuine anti inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and wound healing activity, which is why it's increasingly being looked at for conditions like atopic dermatitis, where the skin barrier, inflammation and microbiome are all disrupted together.
Where I want to be honest with you: much of this evidence comes from animal wound models, in vitro cell studies and small clinical evaluations, not large randomised human trials. That doesn't make it hype. It makes it early stage, promising evidence, which is exactly how I describe it to my customers.
What tamanu oil does inside CALM Balm is straightforward. It helps replace the lipids that a damaged barrier has lost, which is why irritated skin feels tight, dry and reactive in the first place, and at the same time it calms the inflammatory response that's driving the redness and discomfort. Barrier repair and inflammation control from one ingredient, which is rare.
Sea buckthorn oil: the barrier fatty acid your skin already makes
Sea buckthorn oil, from Hippophae rhamnoides, is unusual among plant oils because it's rich in palmitoleic acid, an omega 7 fatty acid your own skin already produces as part of its natural lipid barrier. A comprehensive review of the existing literature describes sea buckthorn oil's anti inflammatory, antioxidant and tissue repair properties, and how these mechanisms both reinforce barrier function and mitigate inflammation, particularly relevant to conditions like eczema and psoriasis where the barrier and the inflammatory response are disrupted together. The same body of research also documents antimicrobial activity against pathogens commonly implicated in inflamed and infected skin, including Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes, which is why it's doing double duty here alongside zinc oxide on the antibacterial side of the formula. In an imiquimod induced psoriasis model, topical sea buckthorn oil produced a notable reduction in redness, scaling and inflammation, and separate research on its role in atopic dermatitis models has shown that its essential fatty acids, combined with its anti inflammatory activity, contribute to restoring the skin barrier.
Again, honestly: a lot of this comes from animal models and mechanistic review rather than large human clinical trials, though the direction of the evidence is consistent across multiple independent studies, which does carry weight.
Shea butter: the emollient with the most clinical backing here
Shea butter, from the nuts of Vitellaria paradoxa, is one of the few ingredients in CALM Balm with actual published clinical data behind it rather than mechanistic review alone. A published trial from a paediatric dermatology clinic compared a shea butter lipid complex cream against a ceramide based product in children with atopic dermatitis, and found the shea butter cream well accepted, with patients who tolerated it well showing reduced itching and improved quality of life. A separate case report in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology documented improvement in eczema severity scores after a week of daily shea butter application.
Its fatty acids, oleic, stearic, linoleic and palmitic, replenish barrier lipids directly, while compounds like triterpenes and cinnamic acid esters contribute genuine, if more modestly studied, anti inflammatory activity. This is the ingredient in the blend I'd point to first if you asked me which one has the most human evidence.
Ucuuba butter: the one I'll be most honest about
Ucuuba butter comes from the seeds of Virola surinamensis, an Amazonian tree, and has a long history of traditional use for skin inflammation and irritation. It's unusually rich in myristic acid, which contributes to its deeply nourishing, barrier reinforcing texture, and it has a naturally high melting point that makes it a useful, stable base fat in balm formulation.
Here's the honest bit: this is the ingredient in CALM Balm with the thinnest peer reviewed evidence. What I found in the literature was mostly composition data, fatty acid profiles and traditional use reporting, along with formulation studies that use ucuuba butter as a delivery base rather than testing its own anti inflammatory effect directly. I use it because of its texture, its traditional use profile, and because it fits our sourcing values, not because I can point you to a strong clinical trial. I'd rather tell you that than dress it up as more evidenced than it is.
Blue chamomile: the well studied calming agent
Blue chamomile, distilled from German chamomile (Matricaria recutita), gets its striking blue colour from chamazulene, a compound formed during distillation that's genuinely one of the better characterised anti inflammatory agents in botanical skincare, alongside its companion compound alpha bisabolol. A network pharmacology study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology examined the mechanisms behind German chamomile's use in eczema, describing its anti inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant activity and its long history of use for calming irritation, redness and swelling.
Chamazulene and bisabolol are two of the more mechanistically well understood botanical actives we use, which is exactly why blue chamomile earns its place here rather than as a fragrance note.
Zinc oxide: the old, unfashionable, very well evidenced one
Zinc oxide doesn't have the glamour of a new peptide complex, but it has something more valuable: decades of dermatological use and a genuinely strong evidence base.
Clinical and mechanistic research shows zinc oxide reduces bacterial load on skin, disrupts bacterial cell membranes, and inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators including TNF alpha, IL 6 and nitric oxide. Reviews of its use in inflammatory skin conditions describe it as playing "a crucial role in skin barrier repair, hydration, and the treatment of inflammatory conditions," with clinical evidence supporting effective use at 5 to 10% concentration for mild to moderate presentations. A systematic review of zinc in wound healing also reported that zinc supplementation increased the likelihood of favourable healing outcomes in chronic wounds.
In CALM Balm, zinc oxide is doing the antibacterial and calming work alongside sea buckthorn oil's own antimicrobial activity, without the irritation risk that comes with harsher antimicrobial actives or steroid based treatments.
Why we blended it this way
Most creams that target "barrier repair" lean on emollients alone. Most that target inflammation reach for a steroid or a single soothing extract. We wanted something that did the full job that inflamed, compromised skin actually needs: rebuild the lipid barrier with tamanu oil, sea buckthorn oil, shea butter and ucuuba butter, calm the inflammatory signalling with blue chamomile, and keep bacterial load down with zinc oxide, without synthetic fragrance, without hormone disrupting ingredients, and without anything you wouldn't recognise on the label.
That's the same "if you can't eat it, don't put it on your skin" principle behind everything we make. Nature provides the idea. I add the science.
The honest limits
I won't tell you this cream is a cure, because inflamed skin is rarely one factor, and root causes matter as much as topical support. I also won't pretend every ingredient in it has been through a large scale human clinical trial, because in botanical skincare, very few ingredients have. Shea butter has genuine clinical trial data behind it. Tamanu oil, sea buckthorn oil and blue chamomile have solid mechanistic and animal model evidence, with human trials still catching up. Ucuuba butter is the ingredient I have the least published evidence for, and I'd rather tell you that plainly than overstate it. What I can tell you is that the formulation is built from the evidence that does exist, and I've watched it work for people with eczema, rosacea and fragile post treatment skin who had tried a lot of other things first.
